Why Saving Matters Even When You Aren’t Going to Spend
It's a mindset and a discipline that's hard to break, especially when you're recently retired. Working hard, saving hard, and giving generously, you might achieve a goal that provides you with investment gains and interest gains to cover your expenses. However, the reality can be far more complex.
Understanding the Bliss of Financial Freedom
Financial freedom is a state where all your obligations are met, and you have a percentage of your income invested, with sufficient funds left over for spending. Many of the financially free individuals I know strive to increase their investments. This is the equivalent of saving, but with the risk of potential loss. It's important to remember that new investors should never invest more than they can afford to lose.
My Journey and the Power of Early Savings
Fresh out of college, I was making good money but still lived paycheck to paycheck. Realizing the need for better financial management, I started investing in the stock market. This made me feel financially secure and relaxed, leading to my current simple lifestyle. I feel confident that if anything catastrophic were to happen, I have enough savings to ensure my financial stability.
As the Jamaicans say, "no worries," and that sentiment holds true for me as I sleep well knowing I have enough. My sisters often joke about my modest lifestyle, but I find it fulfilling to have a cushion for unexpected events.
The Importance of Early Savings
Below is a screenshot highlighting the importance of saving while young.
Typically, people who depend on active incomes retire by 58 or 60, sometimes even earlier. Job losses and health issues can force you to retire before planned. If your work-life is estimated until 55 and you have a life expectancy of 80, make the most of each day while you can!
A Long-Term Investment Strategy
Whether it's for retirement or other investment avenues, it's wise to start saving and investing early and harness the power of compounding. Every pay raise or inflows from side projects do not necessarily need to translate to immediate lifestyle increases. Sticking to your discipline can help you manage your younger expenses better. When you have the corpus and investment income, you can spend on what truly matters.
But remember, do not live to save; instead, save while living. This ensures a rising lifestyle curve and sustained financial stability. What’s better than having your hard-earned money working for you and allowing you to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle?
In conclusion, saving is a critical component of financial planning and can provide peace of mind and security, especially in uncertain times. Developing a strong savings habit can lead to a more secure and fulfilling financial future.
