Afroz Shah, an Indian lawyer from Mumbai, is one such individual who has become a beacon of hope and inspiration through his dedicated efforts in environmental activism.

Afroz Shah is a young Indian lawyer from Mumbai whose name is synonymous with the world’s largest beach clean-up project. In 2016, the United Nations awarded him their top environmental accolade, the Champions of the Earth Award, for his remarkable efforts to clean up Mumbai’s Versova beach.

Versova beach, once dirtied by years of pollution and neglect, saw a transformation under Afroz’s leadership. He and his volunteers managed to collect over nine million kilograms of waste over three years. Through their sustained efforts, they not only rid the beach of trash but also taught sustainable waste practices to locals and students.

The Journey of Versova Beach

The Versova beach clean-up project was not just about physical labor. It was a philosophical change that Afroz aimed to instill in his community. He sought to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and sustainable practices, urging people to take responsibility for their environment and actions.

The project quickly gained momentum, garnering the participation of over 70,000 adults and 60,000 students. The enthusiasm and dedication of these individuals demonstrated that change is achievable when people unite with a common purpose.

Afroz elucidated during an interview that non-clearance of the collected waste and abuse by goons were the primary reasons the campaign came to a halt. Despite the logistic hurdles, Afroz’s team continued to face abuse and threats without complaining. Women workers in the project were even assaulted with sticks, and complaints were left unaddressed. He expressed deep frustration, stating, “It is very difficult to scavenge waste from the beach. If some people are not willing to clean our oceans, then there is no way out.”
