Unprecedented Military Experiences: A Humvee Encounter in Baghdad

In the chaos of military service, encountering the unforeseen can shape one's perspective and leave a long-lasting impact. This article delves into two extraordinary military stories, highlighting the unpredictable nature of jungle training and the unexpected events during a Humvee encounter in Baghdad.

The Jungle Training in Brunei

During my time in the United States military, I was stationed in a place where the President of the USA claimed there were no troops. This experience did not sit well with me, and I still question the government's transparency to this day. One of the most unforgettable moments occurred during a jungle training in Brunei.

While on patrol following a river, we stumbled upon a Dayak village. Our encounter with the village elder was eerie and almost surreal. The elder, a wizened old man who likely engaged in headhunting or cannibalism before WWII, spoke to us in a mix of English and gestures.

Upon opening dialogue, our patrol leader, Russell, attempted a conversation in broken English. When the old chief mentioned that fishing was not good, Russell, thinking strategically, decided to use a block of P4 plastic explosive to demonstrate how to catch many fish. The explosion created a massive waterspout, with a tidal wave sweeping the canoes and drying frame into the village. As we stood by, the chief was thunderstruck, watching in disbelief as the fish floated to the surface and moved downstream. This episode was our least dignified moment during the training.

A Humvee Encounter in Baghdad

Another significant event transpired in 2004 during a journey from Camp Speicher to Baghdad. Our unit, consisting of 30 5-ton and 2 2.5 Deuces, was moving at a snail's pace, much to our frustration. Deciding to take a break, we pulled our Hummer out of the convoy and parked near the concrete and HESCO barriers to relieve ourselves discretely.

As I stood with my pants down, four Iraqi militants suddenly appeared and began firing AK-47s at us. Despite my exposed state, I and my battle buddies, armed with M4s, managed to shoot them down within seconds. Our unit was unharmed, while the militants were either dead or dying. The Hummer, barriers, street, and one of the trucks in the convoy were hit, but not us.

This incident, although chaotic, was a testament to the unpredictable nature of warfare and the invaluable training and readiness of troops. Had the militants walked away, they would have violated the rules of engagement. After the encounter, I quickly tuck "it" in and buttoned up my BDU before the guards arrived and conducted our After Action Report (AAR).
