The Privacy of Personal Expression: Why Some Prefer Concealed Tattoos
In today's ever-evolving world of personal expression, tattoos have become a popular choice for many individuals to showcase their unique identities. However, not everyone wants their tattoos to be on full display. Some prefer to keep their body art under wraps. This article explores the reasons behind this preference, using personal experience and insights to shed light on the motivations behind concealed tattoos.
Visibly or Undercover: A Personal Journey
My tattoos are a private matter, kept undercover for a reason. None of my tattoos are visible unless you're in a position to see the tattoos on my arms through a short-sleeve shirt, or on my legs if I'm wearing shorts. This choice wasn't made lightly. It's rooted in the societal norms of the 1960s when I started my career in retail. Visibility was frowned upon, and I opted to keep my tattoos undercover as I transitioned into my professional journey.
Although I left retail in the early 1970s, my tattoos didn't become public until my 50s, when I decided that the lower arm and visible tattoos were not for me. I've always admired people with visible tattoos, but for me, there's a value in keeping this part of my identity private. If I were to change my mind, I would consider getting tattoos on the back of my hands, but for now, I prefer the concealment. This reveals that my preference for concealed tattoos is not set in stone and can evolve with time.
Perspectives on Concealed Tattoos
When it comes to my own tattoos, I like the idea of hiding them as much as possible. There are several reasons behind this preference:
1. Individuality and Confidence: Knowing that I already look somewhat unconventional as a redhead, I want to express my uniqueness while minimizing the risk of additional judgment. Concealing my tattoos allows me to focus on other aspects of my personal style while maintaining a level of discretion.
2. Elderly Relatives' Approval: Unfortunately, my elderly relatives do not approve of the body modifications I choose. I understand their perspectives, and respecting their feelings is essential to maintaining harmonious family relationships. Hence, I aim to keep my tattoos, which are often meaningful and personal, undercover to avoid unnecessary conflict.
3. Career Concerns: While I am a freelance writer and blogger, it's important to consider future employment options. Working in retail, for example, might be necessary to ensure financial stability. Despite my dreams of working flexibly, reality can be challenging, and making sacrifices to secure financial stability is a realistic approach.
4. Future Planning: Future tattoos that I am keen on getting are highly meaningful to me. Only I and my closest loved ones would know about the images and words I have chosen. I believe that the act of keeping these images hidden adds to the personal significance and emotional impact they hold.
5. Evolving Society: While it's true that society is becoming more accepting of diversity and alternative expressions, there is still a long way to go. Some employers maintain strict rules regarding visible tattoos in the workplace, making the choice to conceal tattoos a sensible one.
Closing Thoughts
It’s worth noting that my stance on visible tattoos for others is quite different. While I don't oppose visible tattoos, my personal preference leans towards concealing my own tattoos. This balance reflects a nuanced understanding of personal values and societal dynamics.
As technology and societal norms continue to evolve, the conversation around tattoos will undoubtedly continue to change. For now, I find comfort in the choice to keep my tattoos under cover, a decision that represents both a statement of personal preference and a commitment to my identity's emotional and psychological complexity.
So, whether you wear your tattoos proudly or keep them as a personal statement, the decision ultimately lies with you. Stay safe, happy, and reflective in your journey of self-expression.
