Reflections on a Law Enforcement Career: Personal Regrets and Professional Achievements

Introduction

Ever wondered about the darker aspects of a law enforcement officer's life? Here, I share some of my personal regrets and the challenges I've faced during my career. With over a decade of experience, I delve into the tough decisions I've made and the trade-offs that come with the job. I also discuss the positive outcomes and professional strengths that compensate for the negatives.

Late Entry into the Field

One of the biggest regrets I have is joining the police department at a later age. In my home state, one could start at the age of 18—now, looking back, it seems incredibly young. At the time, I wasn't ready for the tremendous responsibility that comes with the job. However, being delayed entry into the field has also allowed me to mature and fully appreciate the challenges and nuances of law enforcement. If I had pursued a federal law enforcement career after college, I would have been fully retired by now. This decision, while filled with regrets, has helped shape me into the person I am today.

Challenges and Tragic Loss

One of the most significant personal struggles has been dealing with a debilitating neck injury. The aftermath of the injury has been a continuous battle with chronic pain. I am forced to rely on pain medication, which affects my daily life in numerous ways. On top of the physical pain, there is a moral dilemma: I feel unfairly criticized and vilified for doing my job. This job like any other, does have its share of bad apples, yet law enforcement receives a daily bombardment of negative scrutiny. It's unfortunate that professions like train engineers, airline pilots, or auto workers do not face the same level of scrutiny.

Another personal regret is witnessing the loss of a colleague. Six months after my retirement, the officer who took my car was killed in the line of duty. Being less tall than the officer, I might have been hit by the K plate on my vest if the roles were reversed. However, this tragedy has made me more grateful for the ability to retire and the time I had with my family.

Professional Achievements

Switching careers to aircraft dispatching and meteorology brought its own set of challenges and rewards. My academic background, including an MS in weather forecasting, has allowed me to anticipate severe weather outbreaks and provide crucial information to local communities. In one instance, I helped townspeople in Kansas seek shelter before the National Weather Service could provide warnings. Additionally, I have advised my crew and passengers to avoid damage and safety hazards, ensuring their well-being during inclement weather. It is fulfilling to know that my education and experience have been vital in saving lives and property.

Personal Savings and Career Endeavors

As a forecaster, I have also saved my family and friends from weather-induced risks. While my primary career as a law enforcement officer was physically demanding, my interests and skills in weather forecasting have provided a different kind of challenge. For example, I have been able to save my wife and daughter from potential harm during an armed robbery by recognizing the situation and taking appropriate action.

Despite the challenges, my current condition restricts me from engaging in activities I enjoy, like riding horses or driving my customized Jeep. However, there have been instances where my training and quick thinking helped save lives, including that of an injured person and preventing armed robberies.

In conclusion, while my career in law enforcement has been marred by personal regrets and professional challenges, it has also provided me with a sense of purpose and the ability to make a positive impact in various aspects of life. My story is one of resilience and the importance of balance in making career choices.
