Reflections on Ageism: An 82-Year-Old Woman's Perspective

Ageism, or the discrimination and prejudice based on a person's age, is a significant issue in society. Yet, not everyone experiences it the same way. In this article, I share my personal journey, as an 82-year-old, to challenge the notion that age discrimination is rampant. Through my experiences, I explore the nuanced relationship between age and societal perceptions.

Living without Discrimination

At 82, I can confidently say that I have never felt the sting of discrimination. Despite societal stereotypes, I maintain strong interactions with people across different age groups. I engage with friends, family, and even strangers in various settings, embodying a vibrant social life.

For instance, my interactions at the beach, on motorcycles, and even during a casual coffee break with friends are joyful and fulfilling. Younger people, whether my motorcycle buddies or those I encounter while walking with my dog, treat me with respect and interest. While little kids might jokingly remark, gee mister you're really old aren't you, I turn it into a playful exchange rather than an insult. This flexibility in mindset helps me navigate age-related interactions with ease.

The Golden Generation

As a 64-year-old, I had the precious benefit of being part of the golden generation. This generation enjoyed a range of privileges that were often taken for granted. We were lucky to experience:

No wars to fight

Free healthcare

Job security

Affordable housing

A final salary pension

Freedom to live and work in the EU

A 50-year visa in India

These opportunities made us lucky, but the question of discrimination is still pertinent. While we have had our fair share of advantages, geriatric discrimination can still pose challenges in various aspects of life.

Confronting Age-based Assumptions

Despite my positive experiences, age-based discrimination is far from non-existent. For instance, during job interviews, I have occasionally faced scrutiny that made me question whether I was truly still employed.

Moreover, I have encountered various age-based assumptions, such as:

Technological incompetence: While I am happy to embrace technology, some assume that I am incapable of handling it. However, I am proud to be a techno junkie.

Invisibility: On my solo holiday in Cyprus, I faced the challenge of being ignored by serving staff, who attended to couples and families but completely neglected me. It took my complaint to the bar manager to receive attention.

Mental incompetence: I have had people speak to me in a manner more appropriate for a three-year-old, making assumptions about my mental capabilities. When this happens, I address the issue firmly.

Homogenization of older people: There is a tendency to assume that all older people are the same. This stereotype does not apply to me, as my experiences and opinions are unique and valid.

Unwanted advice: Older people often receive advice that would never be given to younger individuals, assuming that we cannot make our own decisions. This is both frustrating and disempowering.

While my experiences may differ from others, the struggle against ageism is a shared one. By acknowledging and addressing these issues, we can work towards a more inclusive and respectful society where age is just one of many qualities that define us.

Trust me, being old is not for sissies! It comes with its own set of challenges, but also with a unique set of advantages. The key is to embrace our experiences and use them to reshape societal perceptions.
