Overcoming Failure: Embrace It, Learn From It
Overcoming Failure: Embrace It, Learn From It
Have you ever felt that you had failed at something significant in your life? Many of us face setbacks and challenges that can make us question our abilities. However, learning to embrace failure and see it as a learning opportunity can lead to significant personal growth.
The Spectrum of Failure
When we were children learning to walk, we were never concerned about the word 'failure.' Instead, we viewed each fall as a chance to get back up, adjust, and try again. However, as we grow older, the perception of failure often changes. We now believe that any setback in life is reason to stop enjoying and appreciating life. But does failure truly exist?
From a psychological perspective, a failure is an experience that does not meet our expectations. The key here is to foster an expectation-free mindset. As we do not expect perfection in ourselves or our endeavors, we have nothing to 'bounce back from.'
The Power of Resilience
I have faced many failures in my life, and each one has provided me with valuable lessons. For me, failure is an informative, necessary experience that redirects me forward, propelling me toward a better path.
In 2017, I lost my job of nine years to someone who was younger, cheaper, and considered less experienced. Professionally, one might consider this a significant setback, especially for someone in their mid-50s still in the workforce. It is a common reality for countless Americans at this age: they have to find something of lesser value.
Adapting and Overcoming Challenges
After two years of frustration, I tried my hand at selling insurance but ended up in a 'total failure.' Despite the harsh realities of job loss and the uncertainty of my future, I knew it was time for a significant change. I started volunteering at a historical society museum, where I found a new passion and purpose.
Today, I am retired, but I volunteer part-time at the museum, and I am happier than I have been in a long time. This journey taught me that it's essential never to give up on yourself, especially during dark times. I have always remained adaptable and persistent, and this mindset has helped me navigate through life’s challenges.
Embrace Failure as a Step Forward
Failure is often perceived as giving up on our goals. When our plan does not yield the desired results, we may feel that we have failed. However, this is where we gain wisdom about what will not work for us. Changing our perspectives can change our lives.
Remember, we only truly fail when we stop attempting to achieve our goals. If your plan does not produce the desired results, do not abandon the goal; instead, develop a new plan. Persistent effort and adaptability can lead to success and fulfillment.
So, the next time you face a setback, remember that failure is not an event but a perspective. Embrace it, learn from it, and keep moving forward. You got this.
