Navigating the UPSC CSE Prelims: A Comprehensive Guide to Success
Clearing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Combined Selection Test (CSE) Prelims is no small feat. My journey with the UPSC has been a marathon of four attempts, with my previous Mains attempts in 2021 and 2022 leading to a missed interview. However, the results of the 2023 CSE Prelims were a turning point.
My Journey to the Prelims
This year, I waded through a total of 87 General Studies (GS) questions and 43 Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) questions. My scores ranged between 106-110 in GS and 80-84 in CSAT, as per various answer keys. As the proverbial fog lifts, I am excited to share the strategies that helped me navigate the complexities of pre-liminary exams over the years.
Understanding the Variability of UPSC Prelims
The exams are inherently unpredictable, as illustrated by the year 2023. An unusual Eelino effect had an impact on the CSAT paper, while the GS section experienced an interesting dipole effect, leading to a perfect mix that influenced the minimum support marks or cut-off scores.
Clearing the first hurdle in the UPSC CSE Prelims is merely the beginning of a larger journey. The challenges ahead are significant, especially with the Mains awaiting. The road to success is filled with unexpected twists and turns, but with the right approach, the final destination can be achieved.
Lessons from My Experience
My pre-final scores in GS are slightly below last year, coming in around 106-110, but this was not due to any miscalculation or shortage of preparation. On the other hand, the CSAT paper proved to be a significant challenge, with scores barely crossing the cutoff of 73-75. A different interpretation by UPSC in a few key questions could have easily pushed me out of the race. However, these challenges are part of the journey and have helped build resilience.
The real challenge lies ahead in the Mains. It is imperative to prioritize Mains preparation with unwavering focus. Whether you are a first-timer or have previous attempts, an extensive and rigorous preparation regimen is essential. Over the next six to seven months, immerse yourself in the vast array of subjects that the Mains will cover.
A Ray of Hope and a Call to Action
While we celebrate the success of those who have qualified for the Mains, it is equally important to acknowledge those who could not make it. The results are a combination of preparation, luck, and the unpredictable nature of the exam. Regardless of your outcomes, the focus should be on preparing for the Mains. This is the only way to ensure a successful future.
