INTJs and Games: Intellectual Fascination and Strategic Enjoyment
INTJs and Games: Intellectual Fascination and Strategic Enjoyment
INTJs, known for their strategic thinking and love for planning, often derive pleasure from games that challenge their intellect and require deep thinking. They may prefer strategy games, puzzles, and role-playing games that demand complex decision-making and long-term planning. While individual preferences can vary widely, many INTJs appreciate games that offer a mental challenge and the opportunity to develop and fine-tune strategies. However, it’s not uncommon for other INTJs, such as myself, to find a different joy in games or to play them less frequently.
Personal Reflections on Gaming
I, too, am an INTP, and while video games are not a daily habit for me, I do find that they can be mentally stimulating. Growing up in a time where social interactions took precedence, I developed a preference for real-world interactions rather than virtual ones. However, when I do play video games, it's usually for just a short period to escape the monotony of real life or to engage in creative and strategic activities.
Unfortunately, the current gaming industry has increasingly prioritized profits over quality content. Games are often rushed into release in early stages, and many are focused on microtransactions rather than providing an engaging play experience. This shift has left many players, including myself, disillusioned. I used to love being transported to different worlds, but now I find that many games prioritize earning over enjoyment. Capitalism has undoubtedly impacted the gaming industry, much like it has impacted other sectors.
Impact on Personal Skills and Interests
Games have been a significant part of my life, not just for entertainment but also for developing skills. I have utilized my gaming experiences to enhance my communication and strategic thinking, skills that have been beneficial in my involvement with university esports gaming clubs and in running a casual gaming group with friends. These communities have helped me foster a love for gaming while maintaining a balance between productive work and leisure.
A Personal Journey in Gaming
As an INTJ, my love for games is deeply rooted in their intellectual and strategic aspects. I have gained a great deal from these experiences, so much that I have even been involved in making video games. However, my productivity-focused mindset often takes precedence over playing games. I prioritize completing productive tasks before indulging in leisure activities. Despite this, I remain deeply involved in the gaming community.
My favorite games include the Assassins Creed series, which offers a blend of complex narratives and strategic gameplay. I also have a soft spot for Tomb Raider, particularly the 2013 version, and SOTR. I recently played a survival game by Ubisoft called Beacon: The Last of Us, which is about surviving and connecting with loved ones. This game deeply resonated with me as it highlighted themes of survival and family.
Contrary to some popular series, such as GTA V, I find them less engaging and even boring. These games lack the depth and narrative complexity that I seek in my gaming experiences. In summary, while an abundance of high-quality games enriches my gaming life, the current state of the industry often leaves me seeking the escapist experiences I find in TV and movies.
In conclusion, while not all INTJs share the same gaming habits, they often find a unique satisfaction in games that challenge their intellect and require strategic thinking. Whether in pursuing quality gaming content or exploring other entertainment forms, the importance of gaming to INTJs lies in the intellectual and strategic fulfillment they provide.
