Exploring My Traditions and Rituals: A House Renovators Perspective
Exploring My Traditions and Rituals: A House Renovator's Perspective
Introducing My Ritual: Remodeling Houses
For the past few years, my primary ritual when it comes to downtime has been remodeling houses. This pastime offers both a therapeutic and practical outlet for my knack for problem-solving and creativity. After acquiring a charming but dilapidated house and a quaint cottage, I found myself drawn towards giving these properties a complete facelift.
About My Houses
We purchased a 100-year-old Craftsman-style home that required a dramatic makeover. The hardwood floors had seen better days, and the bathrooms and kitchen looked like they belonged in the 1970s. The color in each room was a somber, beigey-tan tint. While our initial plan was to transform both properties for a flip, we quickly became attached to the home, especially after installing a brand new tuxedo kitchen and redoing the bathroom.
The house boasts a mud room, a full pantry, a sewing room, and a generous basement that we are converting into a recreation room, designed to resemble a French boudoir. This project has been a labor of love, allowing me to engage in various DIY activities, such as tiling, hardwood flooring, painting, and installing new cabinets.
Recent Remodel: The Cottage
In May, we lost our renter, and the little cottage needed a new lease on life. We undertook a complete makeover, and now it is up for sale. This experience has solidified my dedication to both projects, even in the absence of traditional free time.
What About Free Time?
With my current job only providing me with four hours of work a week, and no signs of a better employment opportunity, my days off have become almost nonexistent. However, I often find myself engrossed in projects for the houses, leaving me with little time for other activities. Today, I'm working on a recovered sectional that needs a makeover for the rec room.
Relaxation and Photography
When I do have time off, I often immerse myself in photography using my iPhone. This form of creative expression allows me to explore the world, learn about it, and find new ways to relax. Sometimes, I hike through the dirt or crawl on my hands and knees to get the perfect shot. Photography is not just a hobby; it is a tradition when I'm not busy with household projects.
