Dealing with Misjudgment in the Workplace: A Reflective Journey

Often, the journey of a seasoned professional might face unexpected challenges, especially in a dynamic and competitive job market. In my personal experience, this has been incredibly noticeable in my workplace environment where valuable expertise is not always recognized, leading to instances of professional belittlement. This reflection aims to explore these experiences and share insights into navigating such situations with grace and integrity.

Background in the Medical Field

Throughout my 25-year career in the medical field, I have had the privilege of working in some of the most demanding and critically important roles. For 12 years, I served as a Critical Care Technician in an ICU at one of San Diego’s busiest hospitals. The job was intense and highly specialized, requiring the ability to handle high-pressure situations, monitor patients, and manage emergency equipment. The responsibilities were numerous, and the training was exhaustive. My experiences included inserting Foley catheters under emergent situations, performing EKGs during codes, and managing various medical devices and catheters.

In addition to my ICU experience, I worked in the Operating Room at a level 1 trauma center in one of the nation's most dangerous neighborhoods. The environment was fast-paced and unpredictable, demanding quick thinking and a composed demeanor. Despite the challenges, I found the work exhilarating and deeply rewarding.

Current Position and Challenges

Recently, due to the high competition in the job market, I took on a position as a front desk administrative assistant in an urgent care facility. While my new role is vastly different from my clinical past, it is a job. The transition has been challenging, but I remain grateful for the opportunity to contribute in a way that benefits the community.

Despite my extensive experience and the expectations of my peers, my current role has led to misunderstandings and assumptions about my capabilities. My colleagues and supervisors are aware of my previous work experience but are not fully informed about the nature and depth of that experience. Consequently, they often assume that I am unfamiliar with medical terminology, clinical jargon, and procedures.

Coping Strategies

Encountering these challenges has tested my professional integrity and my commitment to treating others with respect. Initially, it was discouraging to face condescension and misunderstandings. However, over time, I have developed strategies to maintain respect and professionalism.

One of these strategies is to prioritize mutual respect. I remind myself that each person in the workplace has unique strengths and contributions. While it might be tempting to prove my worth by exhibiting knowledge, I choose not to do so, believing that doing so would undermine my principles. Instead, I focus on being a supportive colleague and contributing to a positive work environment.

Another approach is to address the root of these misunderstandings through open communication. While I do not often highlight my past achievements, I have found that explaining the nature of my previous work can sometimes bridge the gap in understanding. This has led to more meaningful interactions and collaborations.

Reflection and Lessons Learned

Reflection on these experiences has taught me several valuable lessons. Firstly, it is crucial to maintain a balance between humility and self-confidence. Understanding that everyone has unique skills and contributions can help shift one's perspective and foster a supportive work culture. Secondly, the behavior of others is often a reflection of their own insecurities or perceptions, rather than an inherent flaw in the individual they are belittling.

Perhaps most importantly, my journey has reinforced the importance of treating everyone, regardless of their position, with the same level of respect and courtesy. This principle, famously illustrated by the saying, 'treat the janitor with the same respect as you would the CEO,' remains a guiding light in navigating the complexities of the workplace.
