Choosing the AIESEC GCDP Internship: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Deciding whether to pursue the AIESEC GCDP (Global Cultural Development Program) internship can be a life-changing decision, especially for those who thrive on challenges and new experiences. However, it is crucial to assess one's personal values and readiness for the journey.

Know Thyself

Before embarking on any internship program, reflect on your personal goals and values. The AIESEC GCDP offers an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in a different cultural environment and gain valuable skills. But it is not for everyone. If you prefer a comfortable and predictable lifestyle where challenges are avoided, you may find the GCDP too daunting. The program demands resilience, adaptability, and an openness to new experiences.

My experience in assisting students in their application process has given me insights into the varying attitudes towards the program. Some students, like that girl who did not pass her interview, might be more suited to a more structured and controlled environment. For her, the prospect of cultural adjustments, changes, and the unknown seemed like too much to bear. Thus, choosing the GCDP will not be a good fit for her, and that is perfectly acceptable.

An Internship Embraced with Caution

As one of the AIESECers who have personally participated in and facilitated the GCDP, I understand the mix of excitement and apprehension that comes with it. The program can be both exhilarating and challenging. A vast range of experiences awaits you, and these experiences can shape your life in profound ways. The following are some of the potential outcomes of participating in the AIESEC GCDP:

Emotional Fulfillment: The dynamics of the GCDP can mirror early relationships. It can be transformative like the first boyfriend or girlfriend and can also deepen into lasting friendships of different cultures that last for years. Financial Challenges: Like many cultures, there can be potential pitfalls, including the risk of possessions being stolen (like phones or clothes) or financial mismanagement. Project Management: The program can also present logistical challenges. You might find yourself in a non-functioning project, requiring extensive problem-solving skills. Communication: Conflicts with locals and misunderstandings can arise, testing your communication and negotiation skills. Cultural Integration: Learning the local language, understanding cultural norms, and standing up for your rights can be invaluable experiences.

Ultimately, the GCDP internship is what you make it. If you are willing to invest time, effort, and energy into making the most of this opportunity, you will undoubtedly benefit. However, if you are someone who prefers a comfortable life with a clear plan, the GCDP may not be the right choice for you.

Aiming for Self-Discovery and Growth

The journey through the AIESEC GCDP should be a journey of self-discovery and growth. Whether it is finding a life partner, forming lasting friendships, or developing problem-solving skills, the program offers a wealth of experiences that can shape your personal and professional life.

So, if you are open to growth and ready for a transformative experience, consider the AIESEC GCDP. But if you prefer a life of comfort and predictability, you might want to consider other options that align with your personal values.
