Breaking the Silence: A Letter of Hope for Struggling Seniors
ldquo;Dont, please dont. Im your friend now, so dont worry if you need someone, you can talk to me if you want.rdquo; Often, the voice of a friend or a peer can be the crucial element in breaking the silence surrounding mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.
These words, tender and thoughtful, can also be a reminder that while friends may come and go, the friends that matter are those who stay by your side, unconditionally. Sometimes, even the longest of friendships can hit a difficult phase, but the presence of one supportive friend can make all the difference.
The Struggle of Depressed Mindsets
Depression, a common yet serious mental health issue, can rob individuals of their sense of purpose and joy. For someone who feels they have no friends or that everyone around them is superficial, the feeling of being fully alive seems out of reach. However, it is important to recognize that this absence of joy is temporary and that there is a way to regain a sense of aliveness.
Depression often includes apathy and a lack of care for one's surroundings. Even the joyful moments that used to bring happiness may seem distant. It is during these challenging times that it is crucial to reach out for support. Friends, family, and support groups can provide the necessary encouragement and resources to start feeling alive again.
Personal Stories and Insights
As someone who is also 18, a senior in high school, and a survivor of manic depression, I understand the pain and the battle. For a long time, I struggled with the idea of suicide and felt isolated. Today is my prom, but all the planning and expectations brought an array of emotions. My date and I faced disappointment when we realized we weren't invited to a music-themed party that promised to be excitement-filled.
Yet, in the midst of our disappointment, a thought struck me. If these people who seem to matter so much really do not, then it was time to reassess their significance in my life. The realization that many of these classmates would not be around in the long term was liberating. It was a powerful reminder to reject their influence and to focus on happiness in a different form.
Worrying about substance abuse and the handful of classmates who are at risk only added to my resolve. Knowing that these peoplersquo;s selfishness and ignorance might lead them towards destructive paths was further motivation to steer clear of their influence. By doing what makes me happy and staying true to myself, I found a way to move forward.
